What Is Law Day?
Law Day was established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to celebrate our legal system. The day serves to recognize the rule of law and to offer education opportunities to people around the country. It is usually organized around an annual theme to highlight different aspects of our legal system and how involved and critical the law is in our everyday lives.
When Is Law Day?
Law Day takes place May 1 every year.
What Is This Year’s Theme?
This year’s Law Day theme is “The Constitution’s Promise: Out of Many, One.” The president of the American Bar Association, William R. Bay, explained the reason behind the theme, “This year’s Law Day theme is about the promise of our Constitution and what unites us as a country and people.”
What Are Some Past Law Day Themes?
Here are a few highlights:
1969 – “Justice and Equality Depend on Law and YOU!”
1991 – “Freedom Has a Name: the Bill of Rights”,
2019 – “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society”
These themes were chosen, in the words of the American Bar Association, “to [provide] an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.”
