HOUSING
Everyone has the right to a safe and affordable place to live.
We help tenants and homeowners in danger of losing their homes due to eviction, mortgage and tax foreclosure, and tangled title. We can also connect you to additional community resources to help you to navigate housing challenges.
Check your eligibility here and submit an intake form so we can connect you to a volunteer attorney who will provide support in navigating your area of need.
Landlord/Tenant
Maryland tenants have a right to legal representation in evictions. We provide representation to tenants facing:
- Failure to pay rent
- Tenant holding over
- Breach of lease
- Subsidy termination
- Constructive eviction
- Defensive rent escrow
If you have received an eviction notice, call us or fill out an online intake to find out how to defend your rights. Our attorneys provide same-day representation in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester County. Learn more about your rights by watching the video above or reading a helpful fact sheet.
Home Ownership/Real Property
If you own your home, it is likely your most important asset. Too often, homeowners pass away, but the deed is never updated. Family members living there may be denied access to important resources, including tax relief and repair grants. Outstanding taxes and liens can prevent properties from being titled to the rightful owner and put the home at risk of loss due to tax or mortgage foreclosure. Our volunteer attorneys can help prevent and address these challenges through planning and legal assistance.
Foreclosures
We help families who are facing foreclosure stay in their homes as homeowners. We can help you understand your rights and options by assisting with loan modification, mediation and negotiations, foreclosure defense and post-foreclosure cases, homeowner and tenant eviction proceedings, and other legal actions that may provide relief from foreclosure. Learn more about foreclosures and how we can help by reading the following fact sheet.
Other Housing
We can help clients who are facing homelessness by linking them with programs, resources, and possibly providing legal assistance that might remedy their legal issues and prevent homelessness. We believe everyone has a right to a safe and affordable place to live.
