LIFE & ESTATE PLANNING
Ensure there's a plan for your assets and affairs.
Life and estate planning services address issues beyond a will — they also address leaving a set of instructions so that your affairs will be handled with dignity and respect. However, far too many individuals don’t plan for these circumstances, which can lead to family conflict and minimize the assets available to pass on to the next generation. Planning ahead allows for the creation of generational wealth while ensuring the needs of yourself or a loved one are maintained.
Check your eligibility here and submit an intake form so we can connect you to a volunteer attorney who will provide support in navigating your area of need. We hold monthly in-person clinics throughout the Eastern Shore. To view the clinic schedule, click here.
Estates, Wills, & Trusts
6 out of 10 adults do not have a will — which means, when they pass, their estate is subject to a costly probate process. Shore Legal Access can help prevent that to ensure all assets are passed down to the next generation smoothly. In addition to creating or updating wills, we can also provide support in crafting advanced health care directives and identifying power of attorney should someone be unable to make their own decisions effectively.
Power of Attorney
If you are no longer able to advocate for yourself in financial, medical, or legal matters, having someone you trust listed as a power of attorney is a key way to ensure that someone will act in your best interest.
Advance Medical Directives
An advance medical directive is the best way to outline your wishes when it comes to medical care in case of an emergency or at end-of-life. You can indicate your religious and personal requests, as well as any treatments you desire (or don’t). It also helps prevent any misunderstandings and gives your next-of-kin a clear direction to pursue that follows your express desires.
Adult Guardianship and Supported Decision Making
If a loved one’s decision-making abilities has deteriorated or they are not capable of caring for themselves or their finances, we can help you navigate the process of becoming their legal guardian. Our volunteer attorneys provide ongoing counseling and support to help people file for guardianship on their own. Our volunteer attorneys can also help you determine whether a Supported Decision Making Agreement would be an appropriate, less restrictive alternative.
Deeds, Titles, and Taxes
If you own your home, it is likely your most important asset. Too often, homeowners pass away but the deed is never updated. Family members living there may be denied access to important resources, including tax relief and repair grants. Outstanding taxes and liens can prevent properties from being titled to the rightful owner and put the home at risk of loss due to tax or mortgage foreclosure. Our volunteer attorneys can help prevent and address these challenges through planning and legal assistance.
Support
Should you need it, we can connect you to our community partners who can provide support with household financial issues, housing, mental health, and more. We are committed to connecting you with community resources to meet life’s challenges.
