For 20 years, Shore Legal Access has worked toward a simple, but essential goal: making sure people on Maryland’s Eastern Shore do not have to face serious civil legal problems alone simply because they cannot afford an attorney.

When someone is facing eviction, struggling with consumer debt, navigating a custody matter or trying to protect their family’s stability, the legal system can be overwhelming. Without guidance, a legal problem can quickly become a housing crisis, financial hardship or family emergency.

That is why access to civil legal assistance matters — not just to the individuals we serve, but to the strength and stability of our entire community.

Founded in 2006 as Mid-Shore Pro Bono, Shore Legal Access now serves residents across eight Eastern Shore counties. Over the past two decades, we have helped more than 40,000 individuals and families, worked with hundreds of volunteer attorneys, provided nearly 100,000 hours of volunteer legal services and helped clients secure nearly $9.9 million in direct economic benefits.

These numbers represent far more than organizational milestones. They represent parents who gained stability, families who protected their homes, older adults who received guidance and individuals who found a path forward during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

And yet, the need is still great.

According to the Legal Services Corporation, low-income Americans receive no or insufficient legal help for approximately 92% of their civil legal problems. For people living in rural communities, the figure rises to 94%. In Maryland, an estimated 461,000 civil cases involve one party with an attorney and another without one.

People are often left to navigate complicated legal systems on their own – not because their problems are unimportant, but because affordable legal help is difficult to find.

Shore Legal Access is committed to changing that. But commitment alone is not enough to sustain this work. Nonprofits need the continued support of donors, volunteers, community partners and local advocates. Fundraising is not simply about keeping an organization operating. It is about making sure essential services remain available to the people who need them.

That is why we are inviting the community to join us for our 20th Anniversary Celebration Comedy Night on Sept. 17 at the Avalon Theatre in Easton.

The evening will include comedy, a silent auction and an opportunity to celebrate the people who have helped Shore Legal Access grow over the past 20 years. Most importantly, it will help support the work ahead.

We chose comedy because this milestone deserves joy. But the purpose behind the event is serious: to help ensure that Eastern Shore residents have somewhere to turn when they face a civil legal crisis.

Twenty years ago, a group of Eastern Shore judges and attorneys recognized that too many people in our region were being left without legal help. They built an organization to respond to that need. Today, we have the responsibility – and the privilege – to carry that work forward.

Justice should not depend on a person’s ability to pay. With the community’s support, we can continue working to ensure it does not.
