As August unfolds and we celebrate Make a Will Month, I’m thrilled to step into the role of Life Planning Case Manager at Shore Legal Access. I’m eager to share how I envision my role and the insights I bring from my previous experiences.
To me, access to justice means ensuring that everyone has the tools and support they need to protect their rights and secure their future. It’s about breaking down barriers so that legal services are accessible to all, regardless of background or economic status. In my role at Shore Legal Access, I envision this playing out by making life planning services, such as creating wills and medical directives, accessible and understandable to everyone. I’m committed to guiding each client through the process with empathy and expertise, ensuring they can make informed decisions about their future.
Before joining Shore Legal Access, I founded Fenix Youth Project Inc., an organization dedicated to advocating for young people and historically disenfranchised communities, specifically those facing housing instability. My proudest accomplishments include developing programs that empowered youth and facilitated their access to essential services. Founding Fenix was a transformative experience for me—it reinforced my belief in the power of advocacy and the importance of giving people the tools to shape their own futures. The skills and insights I gained there, particularly in community outreach and advocacy, will be invaluable in my new role. I look forward to applying this experience to help people navigate the complexities of life planning.
The Lower Shore presents unique challenges compared to other regions. Economic disparities, limited access to resources, and geographic isolation can make it harder for residents to access essential services. However, the Lower Shore also has a strong sense of community and resilience that is truly special. It’s important for those outside the Lower Shore to recognize these challenges while also appreciating the tight-knit community spirit and local pride that define the region. We should celebrate the strength and solidarity of the Lower Shore , which make it a unique and vibrant place.
There’s a common misconception that life planning is only relevant for the elderly, but my work with youth has shown me otherwise. Life planning is crucial at any stage of life. Young adults, in particular, benefit from having legal documents like powers of attorney and medical directives in place, as unexpected events can happen at any age. My experience working with young people has reinforced the importance of starting life planning early to ensure that individuals are prepared for the future, regardless of their age.
As we celebrate Make a Will Month, I invite you to think about how life planning can impact your life, no matter your age. I’m here to assist you in navigating these important decisions and to ensure that you have the support you need.
