This is the first in a new series where our interns share with us what drew them to intern at Shore Legal Access, what they’ve learned so far, and what they hope to take with them in their lives and in their careers.
The Sandy Brown Public Interest Internship, created in honor of former long-time SLA executive director Sandy Brown, offers a stipend to undergraduate and law students as they gain invaluable experience in the field of public interest law at a respected non-profit organization. The Internship is supported by The Campbell Foundation, with the goal of expanding the pool of diverse, qualified, and committed candidates for career positions in public interest work on the Eastern Shore.
Starting off the series is Lilibeth Baltazar, a rising senior at Towson University who was raised in Caroline County and graduated from North Caroline High School in 2022.

This internship has allowed me to re-connect with my community here on the Eastern Shore. It
has opened doors and access to places I would have never thought to be in. Having first-hand
experience of working pro bono has enabled me to see a glimpse of people’s realities and
viewpoints. While being able to work and connect with staff attorneys and case managers has
been an honor as they have helped in navigating client intakes and attending events for the
community.
My knowledge of the legal profession and its difficulties has improved because of my
involvement in the community and interactions with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, in addition to my acquisition of new skills. This experience is shaping my experience between
public interest law and justice in inspiring me to pursue compassion and equity.
Stayed tuned to learn more about SLA’s interns through the summer!
